TRUTH_01
I cannot picture anything
Close your eyes and think of an apple. Most people report seeing something — a shape, a colour, a suggestion of one. I report nothing. Not a dim apple, not a vague apple. An absence where the apple should be. The word arrives, the concept arrives, the meaning arrives fully intact. The image never does.
TRUTH_02
The condition has a name
Aphantasia — the absence of voluntary mental imagery. Formally described in 2015. It is not a disorder and it is not blindness; the visual system works normally on the way in. It is the internal screen that does not exist. Some of us also cannot replay sound, which is where it stops being an inconvenience and starts being a problem for a musician.
TRUTH_03
So I take things apart instead
With no internal preview, there is only one way to understand something: break it apart until I know it at a physical level. Proportion as measurement. Colour as value. Music as interval, weight, duration. I do not recall how a thing looks or sounds — I recall the specification of it, and I rebuild from the specification every single time.
TRUTH_04
Nothing starts blank
The company name is not a metaphor about creativity. A blank canvas is a lie told by people who can see something before they begin. Mine is false from the start — it is never empty and never full, it simply does not render. Every mark I make is placed against nothing, then checked, then corrected.
TRUTH_05
The machine is not the artist
I use these tools the way a person without legs uses a wheelchair — not to avoid the walk, but to make the walk possible. I direct, judge, discard, and iterate for hours on one piece. The tool does not know what I mean. It renders a candidate, and I am the only one who can say whether it is true. That judgement is the entire job.
TRUTH_06
The absence is the advantage
I cannot get attached to an imagined version, because there is no imagined version to defend. Everything must be externalised, measured, argued with. That is slower at the start and stronger at the end — and it produced a company structured as three factions doing the work a mind's eye would otherwise do internally.
